On Audible I’m listening to Mel Robbins’ book The 5 Second Rule. Have you heard about it?
Mel stumbled across this technique that changed her life and now has changed the lives of thousands.
She describes the Rule this way. If you have an impulse to act on a goal, you must physically move within 5 seconds or your brain will kill the idea.
We are feelings creatures and thinking creatures. Often when we have an impulse to act on a goal we hesitate and start THINKING about it. Pretty quickly, we talk ourselves out of it.
On the other hand, the main reason we don’t take action on our goal is that we simply don’t FEEL like it. We don’t exercise but it we don’t feel like it. We don’t eat right because we don’t feel like it. Our feelings sometimes sabotage us.
Try this. The next time you have an impulse to act on a goal count down 5-4-3-2-1 and take action. Physically move.
For example, instead of hitting the snooze alarm, when the alarm goes off count down 5-4-3-2-1 and get out of bed.
Or, When you hesitate to speak up in an important meeting, count down 5-4-3-2-1 and then speak up.
The counting down has a way of interrupting our negative thinking. And, what comes after ONE….blast off!
There’s a lot of brain science behind this so I recommend you get the book and try it out.
