Austin’s population growth has slowed considerably. The chart below, courtesy of the Lance Lambert Housing Report, shows the population growth of America’s 50 Largest Cities.
Austin’s population has grown rapidly over the years, doubling every 20–25 years. Here are some population growth rates for the Austin metro area from 2020–2024:
- 2020–2022: 6% increase, with suburbs like Georgetown, Kyle, and Leander contributing the most growth
- 2021–2022: 2.79% increase
- 2022–2023: 2.1% increase, adding more than 50,000 residents and making Austin the 26th most populated metro area in the country
- 2023–2024: 2.06% increase, with a population of 2,274,000
However, some say that Austin’s growth has recently begun to stagnate. Factors that may have contributed to this include: Low domestic migration, More people moving out of Travis County than into it, Housing costs rising after the pandemic, and Increased opportunities for remote work.
