The idea of a Multiple Listing Service (MLS) has been around for a very long time. In fact, real estate brokers in the late 1800’s got together to discuss this one idea.
They were looking for a way to cooperate even though they were competitors.
Out of that discussion the MLS was born. Brokers would voluntarily agree to compensate each other when one sold the other’s listing in the MLS. It created a level playing field were even smaller brokerages could compete.
