If you are at all thinking about buying a home, here’s what you need to do first. Obtain a copy of your credit report.
Now I’m talking about your report, not your credit score. Your report shows all of the debts, all the people to whom you’re paying money, even the debts that you’ve paid off, as well as any deficiency, any judgment. You know, any dings on your credit score.
Why do you want to pull your report? Well, you want to have it because it’s not too uncommon for there to be mistakes on a person’s report, and that could take some time to clear up. You want to make sure there’s no mistakes.
You also want to have a good handle on who it is that you owe and how much you owe, because all of those things come into a play when you are applying for a mortgage loan.
By the way, you are entitled to get a free copy of your credit report from the three credit reporting agencies. You know, Trans Union Equifax, and Experian at least once a year.
And if you stagger that out by doing it about once every four months, you’ll have a current copy of your report at any time.
